I have a raven tattooed on my ribs. Black bird, smoke and flame, with something gold above my heart, the only record I kept of the one time I loved someone so completely it almost took me under. Four years was long enough to rebuild. Long enough to know I wasn't doing it again.

I told myself a lot of things, most of them the same lies I told him the first time, while I watched him make himself smaller and smaller until the man I loved started disappearing. I always knew that was my fault. What I didn't realize, until I had nowhere left to run on a ship in the middle of the ocean, was that I was still doing it.

He deserves someone who will choose him. Out loud. In daylight.

I just needed to figure out if I was capable of being that person before we ran out of ocean.
