I fell in love once when I was young, but we were star-crossed lovers and, alas, our love was destined not to endure the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Now that I am old, I sometimes wonder what would have become of us if I had dreamt the same dreams then that I am dreaming now. Perhaps our story would have unfolded in a sequence of scenes similar to the ones described in these dreams. And perhaps not. That is the beauty of storytelling: not so much the arrangement of the words put to paper but the power of all the words left unwritten. As much as I loved her, I did not know Flower Song well enough to tell her story, choosing instead to craft a story about her through the eyes of the two people who loved her most: Nika Hope Carter and his sister Danielle Song Carter. I readily confess that I projected much of myself on both Nika and Dany. But there is nothing of me in whatever image you conjure in your mind of Flower Song. She is formed from all the words I was unable to write. I hope you come to love her as much as we do. But learning to love Flower will take no small amount of effort on your part. Truth be told, she could be a bitch.
