Introduction

This thesis is concerned with the scheduling of the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System

(ASRS) machines in Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) environment. In this chapter,

we discuss the context in which the research is undertaken. The Problem of Flexible

Manufacturing Systems is highlighted and how the scheduling of automatic storage and retrieval

machine can provide a solution for transportation management is discussed. Finally, an

overview of the thesis is provided.
