A new action fantasy set in a steampunk Tokyo from the creator of the smash hit Soul Eater HIS BROTHER'S KEEPER Shinra has found Sho at last, and he's eager to rescue him from the clutches of the Evangelist. But Sho has no memory of his older brother, and refuses to accept the possibility that the two of them are related. Shinra's only choice is to beat Sho up and drag him home, but how can he defeat someone who has the power to stop time?
4.5* stars.
Review summary:
The feels and action are strong with this volume. I love the quirkiness of the characters and seeing Shinra's growth as a fire soldier, but also as a young man. To volume 11, let's go!
Full review:
Things are really heating up in Fire Force, I love how almost everything in this volume was Shinra and his little brother Shō, basically being brothers, despite Shō's lack of memory and brattiness - Shinra's phrasing. It's also really cool that, apparently, subways are a thing of the past in the Fire Force world, the underground tunnels now considered a taboo and scary place. Being underground, it's where "the light of Amaterasu cannot reach," essentially being the boogie man for ill-behaved kids. It's still unnerving even for adults too, and the entrances are off limits without written consent with the government.
I love how throughout the whole series even in the serious parts there's a bit (or a lot) of jokes and lighthearted scenes. Though lately, some of the more serious notes have been a little jarring. Like how the team 8's new scientist, Licht, explained to Shinra how heat could make time slow or even stop in the middle of a major fight - that Shinra was in - or the rather corny medical dramatics. Don't get me wrong, I'm rather intrigued how an entire fire company based out of a hospital as a medical unit along with firefighting works in this world, but the team's introduction still felt corner than the normal silliness of the series.
That said, I am glad I have the omnibuses and can keep reading, because I need to learn more about the Evangelist and what their plan is for Shinra and the other Adolla Burst or fourth gen people. And of course see how Shinra is able to get his brother back, because let's be real, he has to convince Shō to come to his side, right!?... Right?
