"This is surreal." I sighed, not knowing what else to say. I knew my history. I was raised by a single mom on the West Coast, until she met Mathis and we became our own unique little family.

My mom was my world. She would have told me if there was anything like this in my past. She was my mom, and my dad was someone else. Someone who was no good. We had had to leave him. This man wasn't him . . . was he? Was he the one we had to get away from? No, she couldn't have known this man or been involved in a kidnapping. It didn't make any sense. But how did he have that test? Or the information about me? Why would he come here? Did he want something?

I looked to Mathis for answers. Was my mom a criminal? Did she know something or do something that helped ruin this man's life? Did Mathis know? Was it even true? There was too much to think about all at once. They were all looking at me as I formed my thoughts.
