Book Overview

The talent show is in a week--how will Nancy come up with an act when she's assigned a super-quiet partner?

Nancy and her partner for the talent show are very different. They don't have any of the same talents. Singing and dancing and trapeze swinging are out--will they find a way to bridge their differences and have fun?

Both shy young readers and exuberant (a fancy word for excited!) ones will enjoy this story.

Nice Lesson, Nice Story

I have been saving these Fancy Nancy "I Can Read" books for my daughter, Nancy. She is not quite old enough to read them on her own, but that day is not too far away. So far, I have been quite pleased with these books. The stories are generally interesting and there are just enough "fancy words" to teach kids well. This book is no exception. In this story, Nancy is assigned a shy boy as a partner for the school talent show. At first, Nancy is worried that their act will be a disaster. Then, she gets to know Lionel and they figure out a successful performance for the show. It's a nice lesson, subtly made. Overall, a good book.

The Show Must Go On

Nancy is excited about the up-coming school talent show, until she learns that instead of being partners with her best friend, she has to be partners with Lionel, a boy that she doesn't really know. Lionel is shy, and doesn't seem to like any of the things that Nancy does. Her parents suggest that Nancy spend time with Lionel so that she can discover what they do have in common. During a visit to Lionel's house, Nancy learns that he loves lions, and from that their talent show act is created. This makes for a great early reader for first and second grade girls. The story is enjoyable and easy to understand. Nancy's "fancy" language will help children learn new vocabulary words. The artwork is colorful and fun to look at. I would recommend this book for all Fancy Nancy fans.

Better ending than most

My 5-yr-old loves this book series. And this one had a better ending than most. I would recommend.

Another fun book from Jane O'Connor

I love it (I'm an adult), the kids loved it too. Another great book from Jane O'Connor!

Sweet school story

This sweet beginning reader story, THE SHOW MUST GO ON, takes place at school and focuses on preparation for an upcoming talent show. When Fancy Nancy gets paired with a boy who seemingly has nothing in common with her, they get to know each other better and eventually discover that they can perform a circus act. A wonderful school story! Fancy Nancy is an adorable, smart, one-of-a kind character. If you're an elementary teacher working on a circus theme or a 'getting along' theme, or a parent who wants to encourage siblings to compromise and work things out, you may want to pair THE SHOW MUST GO ON with the new picture book, STAR OF THE SHOW by Della Ross Ferreri. In Ms. Ferreri's book, you'll meet Francine, the bossy big sister, (who is less goody-two-shoes than Fancy Nancy,)and her tag-along younger brother. They want to put on a cirus, but Francine hogs the spotlight and Max gets fed up being her assistant. Despite their mishaps and mess-ups, they both work together and put on a wildly successful circus. Star of the Show is a funny picture book, designed to be read aloud by the parent or teacher. Both STAR OF THE SHOW and THE SHOW MUST GO ON can lead to helpful discussions on strong characters and how to compromise and work together.
