Brought back by reader requests. A new version of "Until The Trees Are Bare" tells of "up-close" encounters of the author with her parent's loss of mental competence. Her mom had Alzheimer's disease. Her dad was in advanced stages of Parkinson disease. In very different ways they lost abilities yet continued to fight any attempt to become less in charge of their own decisions and care. The true stories are based on extensive journal notes the author kept across several years. The stories are sometimes sad, sometimes funny-always engaging. On the day that the author resorted to a "kidnapping", the situation had wild implications. Her dad believed their "abduction" was staged by an organization for whom she worked. Her mother spun alternative tales, of different but, equally off-base, explanations of a situation that was clearly out of control. The reader is helped to see how these folks continued to try to make sense of whatever was happening. There are insights for caregivers, but little guidance, produced by this account. In some respects, it is a description of what not to do.
