stream of consciousness?

The first person narration of a young man growing up and not-quite-away from his lower working class British clan. He finds life in the U.S. freer from class distinction but is still aware of its presence and he always misses his family as they die off and he is absent from them by necessity most of the time. This is a complex story but short and the reading goes quickly. The use of words is fascinating.I don't believe the food aspect is significant enough to be in the title though it describes the less than appealing foods he likes even as he moves on. It could just as well have included books he reads, music he likes etc. But,after all, he does work for Gourmet magazine.Snapshots of his family are scattered all through the book which really adds to the interest.
