Hordeolums, or eye styes, are a frequent and usually benign infection of the eyelid. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection and is characterised by a red, uncomfortable bump on the edge of the eyelid. Any age can be affected by sties, which can appear on the upper or lower eyelid.
Styes mostly come in two varieties:
External Stye, or External Hordeolum:
The lashes' hair follicles are the source of this kind of cyst. It feels like a painful, red bump on the outside corner of the eyelid.
Internal Stye, or Internal Hordeolum:
Within the eyelid's oil glands, an internal stye forms. It appears on the inside of the eyelid as a painful swelling.
