Great Suspense Thriller

This fast-paced suspense novel quickly draws the reader into the story of a strong, extremely intelligent young woman named Suzanne who was a high achiever in high school with dreams of attending college. When her older sister is killed in cold blood by gang members, Suzanne's world is destroyed. Suzanne avenged her sister's death by killing all except the ringleader and another gang member who escaped into the darkened alleyways of New York City. The police caught Suzanne and charged her with murder, sending her to prison. She gained the nickname `Scorch' for the way she killed the gang members. While in prison, Scorch develops a bond with prison psychologist, Eric Glass. Both respect each other and their relationship almost becomes a father-daughter relationship but Ross doesn't take the familiar route. Instead, Ross shows us they have similar histories. Both lost a loved one; both will not forgive themselves for their supposed ineffectiveness at protecting them; both want to end the sorrow. It is Glass's and Scorch's refusal to forgive themselves that forges their relationship and gives both an underlying sense of mutual respect and understanding. When Scorch escapes, Glass must find her before the police and before she kills the remaining gang members. The female characters are as strong as the male characters in this page-turning novel. Eric Glass is a surprisingly sensitive man. I say surprisingly because it is difficult to write a sensitive man in any story without him coming off as too mushy or weak. Ross balances the feminine and masculine in his characters quite well and it's refreshing to see this throughout the novel. There were tense moments in the story where I couldn't put down the book until I found out what happened next and kept reading until the very end. The ending is very good. Ross avoids clichéd endings seen all too often in suspense novels as he brings this thriller to its logical close. I'm a very picky reader when it comes to suspense thrillers because they read `generic', that is, the main character is almost always a detective/cop/vigilante cop out to get his/her nemesis who has his/her comeuppance at the novel's end. Although a suspense novel, Ross's novel gives readers something to ponder. More than anything, the story shows us everyone has a choice in the path of life and its consequences. My only quibble with this novel is the sequel. Where is it?

Eye for an Eye

Twenty-three year old Suzanne, known as Scorch, is the unlikely heroine of "Eye for an Eye." Eight years previously, after watching her sister die, Scorch slaughtered the female thugs responsible. But one of the gang members, the ringleader, remained. Now, after a bold escape from prison, Scorch blends into the New York City landscape, on the hunt for her. This is a thriller on two levels. Scorch stalks her prey, while the police-abetted by the prison psychologist who has worked with Scorch for eight years-are trying to capture her before she kills again. The other level is more subtle. Eric Glass, the prison therapist, has formed a bond of sympathy with the young woman over the years. They are disturbingly similar in many ways, and though Scorch does not know it, she and Glass share parallel traumas from their pasts. Joel Ross, who has worked for years as a prison psychologist, writes about a world he knows from the inside out. It is a topsy-turvy world, peopled with pimps and prostitutes and strip clubs, a fascinating look at the darker side of life.
