A number of years ago I did a long sea kayak trip paddling around the Kenai Peninsula from Homer to Seward, through Kenai Fjords NP. This book was the guide I took to familiarize myself with the inside scoop on the area, and I found it to be very helpful. It does a pretty good job of outlining the variety and distribution of wildlife, a general geologic and anthropogenic history of the area, offers tips on what to do and see along each section of coast, and puts quite a bit of emphasis on sound and protected anchorages for small boats. The book is written for the hardy person who is experiencing the coast by traveling in a small boat from bay to bay, and leaves enough room for the traveler to discover a few things on their own. The book's emphasis is on water travel and viewing wildlife from the boat, with a few options for going ashore to explore, but does not make many recommendations about real hiking in the area. With hardly any actual trails in the region this is understandable, but there area some amazing peaks to climb and perspective to be gained from elevation. Some parts of the book may be getting a tiny bit dated, but overall this is an excellent introduction to the coast between Homer and Seward for the more adventurous traveler. I enjoyed reading it, taking it along on my trip, and would recommend it without reservation.
