Although the title of the book may lead a prospective reader to believe that both sides of the debate on the existence of spirits, demons, and the reality of possession will be presented, this is simply not the case. Dr. Olson is a true believer, having delivered people from possession personally. There is no question in the book as to whether the demonic is real, and as to whether possession is possible - it is stated as a fact! As a practicing psychiatrist and counselor, Dr. Olson knows the difference between mental illness and demonic possession. He painstakingly outlines what those differences are, and gives steps that others can follow to determine if a person is mentally ill and in true need of psychiatric treatment, or if the person is afflicted by the demonic and in need of deliverance or an exorcism. From this perspective, his insights are invaluable. In fact, his intention was not to probe if these things are real, but to provide a handbook to others in the mental health and deliverance fields on how to approach these types of cases. Perhaps a more suitable title for the book would have been, "Handbook on Spirit Possession for Religious Counselors and Mental Health Professionals." While the book is intended to be used as a handbook or primer for those who may have to deal with possession in their careers, it is an excellent source of information on possession, and the New Age, occult and cults in general, for any person. Dr. Olson outlines the multiple ways that the demonic can come into our lives, and also outlines the different steps that eventually lead to demonic possession. In the case that a person becomes possessed, he also outlines the steps required to free a person from possession. This book is an excellent primer on spirit possession, for the believer and non-believer alike. It is especially suitable for psychologists and psychiatrists who may not know how to tell the difference between a schizophrenic, for instance, and someone truly possessed by a demon. Even though the book is relatively old, it is as relevant now as it was when it was first printed.
