A WIDE-RANGING COLLECTION EDITED BY A MAJOR APOLOGIST
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
John Warwick Montgomery (b. 1931) is one of the major philosophical apologists of the 20th century. He is also a trained lawyer, which influenced his "historical/legal" approach to Christian apologetics. He is perhaps best known as a writer for his book History and Christianity, as well as for his debates with the infamous atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair (1967), with the "Death of God" theologian Thomas Altizer (reprinted in Montgomery's book The Suicide of Christian Theology), as well as with Joseph Fletcher, who wrote the book Situation Ethics: The New Morality (Library of Theological Ethics). (The Montgomery/Fletcher debate is reprinted in Situation ethics; true or false?: A dialogue between Joseph Fletcher and John Warwick Montgomery (Dimension books).) In this 1991 collection, Montgomery contributes a Preface ("This is a book for believers and for unbelievers ... This volume is literally capable of changing lives, and the lives of more than one of its contributors were in fact turned upside down by the force of the evidences here set forth"), as well as an essay, "The Jury Returns: A Juridical Defense of Christianity" which is an excellent summary of Montgomery's approach to apologetics. There are sections on "God and Scientific Cosmology" (including three essays by Robert C. Newman, author of books such as Genesis one & the origin of the Earth), "Revelatory Biology" (four essays by William J. Cairney), "Biblical Criticism and Bible Prophecy," "God's Existence and Christ's Claims," and "A Time for Decision." This is an excellent selection, that will be useful to anyone interested in Christian apologetics.
