Treponema pallidum is the kind of bacterium that is responsible for causing syphilis, which is a form of sexually transmitted disease (STD). When syphilis is in its earliest stages, it manifests as an open sore (also known as an ulcer) that oozes fluid that is infected with syphilis germs. It is possible to contract syphilis by coming into touch with this ulcer or one of the other infectious sores that occur later in the disease, typically while engaging in oral, vaginal, or anal sexual activity.
