The tissue that lines the interior of the uterine cavity is known as the endometrium (or womb). The uterus is a hollow organ that is located in the pelvic region of a woman. It is the organ in which the fetus develops until the time of birth and is roughly the size and shape of a pear. The lower, more constricted portion of the uterus is known as the cervix, while the upper, wider portion of the uterus is referred to as the corpus. The cervix can be thought of as the doorway that leads from the uterus to the vagina. The myometrium is the name given to the outermost layer of the uterus. The myometrium has a substantial thickness and is made up of robust muscles. During labor, these muscles will tighten to help propel the baby out of the birth canal.
