Book Overview

Everett Ruess, the young poet and artist who disappeared into the desert canyonlands of Utah in 1934, has become widely known posthumously as the spokesman for the spirit of the high desert. Many have been inspired by his intense search for adventure, leaving behind the amenities of a comfortable life. His search for ultimate beauty and oneness with nature is chronicled in this remarkable collection of letters to family and friends.

Ruess amuse

A Vagabond for Beauty is a unique biography/autobiography. It captured Everett Ruess’s life month by month in the form of letters that he sent. Everett is a brilliant writer and an intelligent thinker. The emotion and detail put into the letters make them memorable. With unique depictions of America’s southwest and Ruess’s thinking, it makes the book worth a read. It’s super similar to Into the Wild if you're a fan of it. Both McCandless and Ruess are influential figures with beautiful ideas about existentialism. The book also features history about the land and the Navajo people which is fascinating. I’d recommend this book if you find free-spirited people influential.
