A Wonderful Synthesis of Research, Theory, and Practical Ideas

From Preface: "The book is divided into four parts. PART ONE provides a framework for understanding ethical decision making and the relationship of professional ethics in counseling to the broader discipline of ethics. It integrates relevant literature from developmental psychology and presents a new model of ethical decision making. PART TWO reviews the fundamental ethical issues for counselors and therapists, including the ethics of competence to practice, confidentiality, informed consent, dual relationships, responsible assessment, and multiple-person therapies. It ends with an extended discussion of the ethical issues in counseling in a multicultural society. Ethical issues in special settings are the focus of PART THREE. Its topics include the ethics of community practice, school counseling, supervision, teaching, research, forensic activities and consultation. This part of the book deals mos extensively with the emerging ethical dilemmas in the profession, such as the ethical dimensions of managed care and therapy mandated by the courts. PART FOUR deals with procedures for processing complaints and for assisting clients who have been mistreated by another professional. Finally, it attends to an often neglected topic -- the ethical responsibilities of those who recognize that they have violated the ethical standards of their profession. Because self-monitoring and personal accountability are at the core of the profession's values, the book discusses the steps professionals can take to redress their own misconduct and to reduce the likelihood that mistakes will recur. Each of the 15 chapters also includes a set of questions for further discussion and a list of recommended readings."

An insightful guide to ethical decision making.

Elizabeth Reynolds Welfel has written an insightful and informative guide to ethical decision making for anyone in the helping professions. She presents her material in a clear and easily readable form. It is obvious that Dr. Welfel is an expert in the field and her vast knowledge of the research on ethical behavior is evident. Her nine-step model of ethical decision making is a clear blueprint for helping counselors and psychologists make informed and thoughtful ethical decisions. I have used this text to help my counseling students develop an understanding of the ethical standards and underlying principles of the counseling profession and I plan to continue to use it in the future. I highly recommend this book for anyone teaching in counselor or psychologist education, as well as for any mental health professional.
