a sanity-saving life changer

This book tied together a number of loose threads for me - somebody who's done a lot of personal research on female hormones and mental health. There's not much out there on the connection between the two that delves into such detail in clear, concise, layperson's terms. What helped me is that it explores the way estrogen (in particular) can effect moods and mental health throughout a woman's life. I had suspicions but little evidence, due to scanty knowledge among the medical and popular realms. Now I feel affirmed that my adolescent depression was about so much more than just being a sensitive, moody teenager. I can also see possible connections between other hormonal functions (adrenals, insulin, etc.) and reproductive hormones that may be responsible for ongoing issues with mood through adulthood. It also is the first popular resource I have found that points out how to roughly tell what phase of perimenopause you're in: it points out the specific patterns to menstrual flow and cycles that happen at beginning, middle and end. What a relief to find that I seem to be halfway through. I was pleased by the authors carefully listing their resources and studies, and even by the excellent, easy to read typesetting used in the book. In all, this book has been a gift to someone who's explored less-than-satisfactory solutions from traditional medicine, naturopathy, psychotherapy, and existentialism for a problem caused by something off the medical radar until recently. Thank you Drs. Miller and Rogers for wrangling together all of this information in a way that relieves some of the lifelong angst of being an especially hormone-sensitive woman.
