Nine days after an EMP turns America dark, Oliver Merchant and the woman he loves are ambushed on a lonely county road by a gang calling themselves The Pirates. Their leader, Alexander Kitchen, holds Oliver down and carves his face beyond recognition with a boning knife. Then he puts a .45 through Oliver's gut and leaves him in a farmyard to die slow.
Oliver doesn't die.

Along the way he'll find a widow and her eight-year-old daughter, and discover that having something left to lose is the most dangerous thing of all.
