Book Overview

Around 1665, a freed slave painted the portrait of Do?a Gracia de Mendoza, a famous courtesan of the time, and of a boy whom he took in, who later became her lover and finally her husband, Pablo de Corredera. Since then, the painting has undergone ups and downs, it has changed owners several times, it has suffered mutilations and additions and, above all, it has been seen with different eyes by men and women from different times. And in ours someone discovered it, restored it, and reconstructed the true history of the painting and the characters that appear in it. Paloma D?az-Mas has elaborated in The Dream of Venice a refined literary artifice, a tapestry whose plot is slowly revealed in its five episodes, each of which is told by a different narrator voice, who makes use of the literary resources of each era, but preserving a final enigma, or at least a certain enigmatic resonance, as Henry James would advise.
