Thirteen-year-old Bella wants to be a lector like her grandfather, who reads to the workers in a cigar factory in Tampa, Florida. But will Bella be able to get the education she needs during the Depression?
This book captures a special moment and place. Set in south Florida (Ybor City) at the height of the Great Depression, El Lector provides a lyrical portrait of a time when the oral word was valued. Told from the viewpoint of a young girl named Bella, the story focuses on a time of rapid social change and what Bella can do to help her family. Well written and beautifully paced. This would make a wonderful film.
