In 1955, Kennett Love, a reporter for the New York Times, highlighted a notable trend: the increasing desire for travel among Americans had made them the "largest source of tourists in Egypt." This phenomenon coincided with heightened American government interest in Egyptian affairs during the 1950s. The United States aimed to preserve the prevailing sense of East-West order that had been in place since British colonial rule in the late nineteenth century.

Egypt held a crucial position in the British Empire, both symbolically and strategically. As the United States rose to become a global superpower in the post-World War II era, Egypt's significance in the context of U.S. Cold War diplomacy became increasingly apparent.
