Navigating the maze of educational options

I like details, organization, and well-researched information that is neatly packaged and presented in a succinct, user-friendly format. Nancy O'Brien's Education is outstanding. She has successfully tackled the daunting task of revising and updating Lois Buttlar's 1989 edition of the same title, and has created a superb second edition. This annotated bibliography is an excellent ready-reference source for answering questions on education-related topics. The topics cover a wide spectrum of educational issues: funding, financial aid, scholarships, school choice programs, requirements for certification, special education and gifted programs, and much, much more. The introduction defines the scope and purpose of the book, identifies selection criteria, and explains how the contents are organized. A detailed table of contents lists the category of topics covered. Drawing from a wide range of sources, each category lists information by publication format: bibliographies; dictionaries and encyclopedias, directories and almanacs; guides, handbooks, and yearbooks; indexes and abstracts; statistical sources; world wide web and internet sources; journals; and biographies. Foreign sources are also listed. Education organizations and associations are included, while children's and young adults literature guides are not. A paragraph-length description of each entry follows, detailing how the work is arranged, identifying intended users, and the focus of the work. Additional sources of information, if available, are also mentioned. A comprehensive index is arranged by author, title, and subject. This guide is essential not just for public and academic libraries, but any library fielding education-related questions. Intended users also include secondary through university-level students and their parents, education professionals, faculty, administrators, and researchers. Nancy O'Brien is head of the Education and Social Science Library at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus. [Reviewed March 2000]

Educating Yourself About Education

The 3 R's have undergone an incredible transformation in the past few years as old concepts of teaching have given way to experimental methods that sometimes backfire (phonics, for example) All contemporary educators will find this bibliographic reference to primary sources invaluable in their efforts to accommodate modern techniques with traditional approaches. This book covers books written between 1990 and 1998, but texts of older yet still valuable materials are also included. Librarians, teachers, and educational administrators will find a wealth of information in this comprehensive book.
