Eddie Can Do It

Eddie Can Do It takes readers into the heartland of America's farming communities, with unpredictable life changes and choices. Stu, the young, ambitious farmer with a dubious reputation in the valley, meets Connie, a conscientious young woman who has just one sister. Neither seem an obvious match for one another--and yet the heart, rather than reason, wins out. Hoping her first baby will not be an only child, Connie soon learns that being "in the family way" interferes with many of her planned social outings over the years, as pregnant women do not go out in public. Stu is thrilled with his first two "farmhands" and wonders why God then sends them so many girls. But he deems all of them beautiful, including their fourth child, Edna Mae, deemed "Eddie" by her dad. She is the first child born in the new farm house Stu builds after their old one is completely demolished in a tragic fire. Eddie becomes her Dad's tag-a-long as soon as she can toddle, and develops an early passion to work in the fields with him and her brothers. If they can do it, she's sure she can. She is more determined than ever when the family moves from one valley to another, with a farm and land beyond what they ever dreamed of. Though fieldwork is harder than she expected, Eddie does not give up. That same determination inspires Stu to volunteer his daughter for jobs and challenges in coming years that divert her into the field of teaching. Life changes are seen with the coming of modern conveniences. Automobiles replace horse and buggies, and then tractors replace field horses and plows. This further inspires Eddie, who knows she is born to be a farmer. She has also become a woman, though, with feelings toward young men that complicate her plans. However, she will surely have to stay single or find someone who loves farming as much as she does. And then she goes off to Penn State for a summer term and meets a music major. "Could I really leave the valley to be with a man who had turned my heart inside out, not knowing where that would take me? On the other hand, how could I ever be content to stay here without him? The question of which/who I loved more, or had to give up, tore at my heart." This story was inspired by the life of the author's mother. It is a story for readers who enjoy, and yearn for a glimpse into the history and family life that formed this great country. Most of all, it is a love story
