Echoes of Consciousness: Exploring AI, Awareness, and the Patterns That Shape Reality

By Sharon Higgins

AI can now write, diagnose, sentence, and counsel with startling fluency. Echoes of Consciousness asks the question that fluency obscures: is anyone actually there?Drawing on the philosophy of mind, from Descartes to David Chalmers's "hard problem," Sharon Higgins argues that no current AI system possesses genuine consciousness, however sophisticated its output. Part philosophy, part ethical inquiry, part cultural critique, the book challenges the growing assumption that intelligence and consciousness are the same thing.Higgins brings more than twenty-five years in community development finance and small business lending to the argument (work that helped channel over four billion dollars in contracting, financing, and capital opportunities to entrepreneurs overlooked by traditional systems). That experience grounds what abstract philosophy alone can't: what's lost when institutions forget the difference between intelligence and consciousness. A bail algorithm asked to weigh a stranger's liberty. A lending model asked to judge a business owner's character. A diagnosis delivered by a machine that cannot understand the life it affects, or answer for being wrong. The argument is urgent: society is quietly handing profoundly human responsibilities to systems that cannot bear them. Echoes of Consciousness asks not whether AI will become more intelligent, but whether intelligence alone is enough. The question is no longer what AI can do. It's what only a conscious being should do.
