There are eagles on every continent. They are not considered to be top notch predators for nothing. They "can swoop through the air at a great speed and strike with strong, sharp claws called talons." They have magnificent eyesight, but the bony tubes surrounding the eyes limit which way they can look so the eagle moves its head in many different directions to compensate. As a predator the eagle is constantly on the lookout for something to eat. This book talks about a few different owls, including the Harpy eagle of Central and South America and the North American bald eagle, but takes a close look at the golden eagle. This astonishing eagle has a wing span of almost 7 feet (2 meters), has "more than seven thousand feathers" and can reach speeds of up to 190 mph (300 km). You will learn about their fine tuned hunting habits, how the parents take turns feeding their two chicks, how they gently walk in the nest so as not to injure their young, how they tear off strips of meat for them, you'll see what an eagle pellet looks like, why both parents leave the nest to hunt on a continual basis after a month, you'll learn about their home range, how they will fight intruders and more. I loved reading this book and browsing the stunning photographs. Even the title page has a magnificent shot of an American bald eagle swooping down toward the water in search of his prey. The book is obviously very well written and researched and will draw the reader in quickly. The photographs are a mix of action and stills, but every last one of them is crisp, clear and stunning. In the back of the book the author asks the reader to think and look back through the text to rediscover some facts that may have been overlooked. There is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. This is one in the series of "Animal Predators" books.
