Dutch Fred

Frederick Wilhelm Feldman was born in the town of Bunde, Prussia (modern eastern Germany) in 1827. His desire for freedom and land to own in America tortured him long before he married Wilhelmine and their daughter, Marie Sophie, was born.

Convinced Prussia would soon be at war; he left his family behind and began his journey to America in a ship filled with misery and sorrow.

Lost and alone he found his way to Castle Island Immigrant Station on Manhattan, Island where riots and murder occurred daily. The Civil War was ending and America was unsettled. Fred heard of land to homestead in Iowa and a river called the Little Sioux, but life was not as he dreamed and he became discouraged and depressed.

"Dutch Fred -Immigrant" depicts events of the time by weaving his personal history (facts) and fiction together as he travels to America and northwest Iowa. Today his tombstone is still nestled on a bluff overlooking the land he searched so hard to find.
