Fascinating Fantasy

I am not your typical fantasy reader; of course Tim Lebbon is not your typical fantasy writer. His world-building is without fault, his characters are deeply felt and his storyline grabs your attention and never let's go. My only warning is once you start reading Mr. Lebbon you'll be hooked. I'd like to wish you happy reading, but if it's happy you're looking for; you might want to look somewhere else! Magic returns!

Please make this into a movie

What can I say? This book rocked!! It was brutal, violent, ugly, scary while at the same time being poetic, poignant and beautiful. I love the land that was created, Noreela. There are so many stories that could happen in this land!! I am glad to hear that Lebbon has a few more planned. I cannot wait for Dawn to come out! This is the second book that I have read by Lebbon. The first was Berserk. I liked that book but it really wasn't anything I hadn't seen before. The ending of Berserk did not surprise me either. Whatever you do, fight the temptation to read the ending of Dusk first. I was so shocked that I read the last page a couple times to be sure that I read it right. Wow! This would make a simply awesome movie. Rated R of course. I think Peter Jackson could really do something with this. When I began reading this book, I couldn't help draw parallels between this book and Stephen King's Dark Tower. You have the Post Apocalyptic world which is "running down", you have ancient machines that no longer work, you have the decline of civilization, plus the Quest. Boy was I wrong! This book is so dark that it makes King's Work appear downright cheerful. Where King sprinkles humor in his story, Lebbon sprinkles despair. I know that the Dark Tower has its dark moments but you always have a feeling that the good will probably win out in the end. This story...not so much! Ignore the idiots who say that this book is boring. I was never bored! I purposely read the book slowly so I could absorb this strange world and get to know its occupants. These characters are absolutely magical. You start the story thinking that the Red Monks were bad... Well I don't want to ruin it. Read this book!

FUN FUN FUN

This is my favorite example of the New Weird fiction. Horror, SciFi, Fantasy stirred into a crazy cliff hanging action. It's got a jaw dropping ending, and I'm looking forward to the concluding "Dawn" more than any other book coming out next year. This ones for grown ups.

A great epic story

I was familiar with Lebbon's work already when I read this book and I have to say he really outdid himself with this dark, frightening, imaginative fantasy tale. The characters are compelling, well-drawn, and memorable, and Lebbon's style of writing is an absolute delight. Lebbon grabbed my attention from the very beginning (with a horrifying and bloody battle as a Red Monk enters a quiet, peaceful village) and kept me on edge to the very end, when we realize that anything can happen after it gets dark and....and I can't tell you anymore without spoiling it for you. A magnificent book with a treasured spot on my bookshelf. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE.

An amazing story that will leave you wanting more

Tim Lebbon has created an amazing and detailed universe unlike anything else I've read. I am normally a hardcore horror reader, but Tim Lebbon has created a fantasy world I couldn't get enough of. The story begins with magic gone and fighting to make a return. A group of characters from very different walks of life, and some of the most vile and evil characters ever to pop up in print. You will grow to love and loath all the characters. I personally cannot recommend this book enough. You don't have to be a fantasy fan. All you need to be is someone looking for an excellent read.
