Be sure to turn the sound off and watch with subtitles.

Well, here we are with another rendition of “Dune.” This movie is just the first of what will likely become a series, with “Dune: Part Two” now scheduled for release in 2024. So, do not expect any type of conclusion. If you are a binger, you might want to wait until Dune part three is available and see them together. The advantage is that the story does not have to be compressed, leaving you to wonder what is left out. I hope they will still have the same actors playing the same parts. Now, they do take some time to tell the background story for those few people who have not read the book. However, there are several differences for those who read the book, as the screenplay was a collaboration by Dini’s Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. If you were subjected to David Lynch's 1984 version, then this will be refreshing and not so comically melodramatic. The 2000 version was not too bad, but they did not take the time that this presentation does, and had to cut a few corners. Oh, do not forget there is also “Children of Dune” and “Jodorowsky’s Dune.” I will not go into the story as you will want to see it unfold yourself. As I alluded to in the review headline, the background music in Dune Part One is not in the background. It tries to be a character in itself and tells you when to be afraid or that this story is an epic by not letting you find out for yourself. You can turn that noise off if you can read fast enough and just read the subtitles. You only miss some normal sounds of machines or the sound of a voice. Also, because this presentation (unlike the 1984 version) does not have a bunch of out-of-work actors who try to outshine their characters. The characters are more like people, and you can relate to them and their predicaments.’ It would have been nice to have the actor names match the character pictures in the end credits. The DVD has all the extras that tell the story of the making of “Dune” and what they are trying to accomplish.
