Dreams of Flight: And other essays

This is the second book I have written, both self published. The first, "Stumbling Through Life" published in 2010 was a compilation of essays roughly describing some of the events of my life. This is a companion volume of essays written over the last few years, It opens with Dreams of Flight, a series of essays about flying, an unfulfilled obsession I have had since building my first balsa wood model planes as a young boy. What follows this are my rambling thoughts on various subjects - memories, opinions, current events. Having no obvious theme I have tried to partition them into a number of general categories that only approximately fit. They were written roughly in the period from 2010 to 2017. The background noise to that period is that of a world in turmoil. Current problems include wars in the Middle East, millions of refugees from war torn countries trying to find new homes, Russia extending its muscle in Europe, conservative politics on the rise worldwide, increased terrorism, global warming, and nuclear weapon proliferation. At the same time technology has been transforming everyday life at breakneck speed with the increase in robotics use, development of self driving vehicles, the internet with its social networks as common as the old fashioned telephone. And so much more. While all this has been going on my wife Barbara and I have been living in an 1100 unit condo community - The Greens. Semi retired (I outta be - I'm 85) with time on my hands I like to write. The problem is just what to write about. I do write an entertainment column for the condo's quarterly magazine "Life at the Greens", but many weeks go by not writing anything until an idea or memory pops into my head. The results are a series of unconnected ramblings compiled into this book.It is not chronological and can be read front to back, back to front, from the middle out in either direction.
