Dreams and Schemes tells the story of Nick, a young architect who accidentally begins overhearing private phone conversations through his own phone line. It doesn't take long for Nick to realize the couple he's listening to is having an affair; even worse, the man is romantically involved with his wife's best friend.

Nick's initial sorrow for the betrayed wife turns to genuine terror when he overhears the lovers plotting her murder. He is desperate to warn her, but he has no way of knowing her identity or when the crime will take place. All he can do is wait, watching the daily headlines for news of a mysterious death, knowing that by the time he sees it, it will be too late. His waking hours and his dreams alike are consumed by this mysterious woman who is completely unaware of her impending fate.

However, Nick is not the only one listening. Four college students sharing a room have also overheard the conversations. Unlike Nick, they know exactly who the couple is and where the murder is set to happen. They've heard the husband's plan: he will meet his wife on a secluded roadside on her way to the lake, kill her, and push her car into the water to stage an accident.

The students have a scheme of their own. They plan to kidnap the woman before she ever reaches her husband. Their goal is to keep her hidden in an old camp belonging to one of the boys' grandfathers until they can gather enough evidence to put the husband away for attempted murder-or at least convince the woman of the true nature of the man she married.
