For Chick Lit fans

It's senior year and prom is coming up - in a mere four months! There are plans and preparations to be made regarding dates, dresses, and getting permission to attend. Best friends Jordan, Tara, and Nisha are caught up on the pre-prom mood; all are thrilled to go. Jordan has the perfect dress and date and, being a gorgeous blonde cheerleader, will probably be prom queen; but lately, after having met a different guy, she's having doubts if prom queen is really what she wants. Tara is the head of the prom committee, but her other prom plans aren't turning out so nicely; she can't even find a decent dress or date - until a secret admirer starts texting her. Nisha's afraid her strict Indian parents won't let her go to the dance, seeing they forbid her to date, but Nisha's determined to go with her boyfriend (the one her parents don't know about). As prom date looms ever closer, these girls' lives will change as well. Once Upon a Prom: Dream was overall a very cute book, but very average. There wasn't really anything that made this novel stand out from other girly books I've read. There are the boy drama and fashion dilemmas classic to chick lit. The only thing that was missing was the friendship spats, and I hate to say this, but I actually think that a fight amongst the friends would've made the story more realistic because these three friends seemed really different from each other. I wasn't always rooting for the characters either: Tara came off as a shallow girl, Jordan seemed very confused, and Nisha couldn't get her priorities straight. If there's one thing in the characters I could admire, it was their persistence in what they believed in. This novel is good if you're only looking for a short and light read, because the story isn't particularly meaningful. Once Upon a Prom: Dream was not one of my favorite novels and not one that I'd recommend unless you are a devotee to all things chick lit.

A 'dream' come true!

Ah, Prom. A time for designer dresses, shopping sprees, delectable dates, and luscious limo rides. It's the time when girls and boys come together to celebrate the last remaining days of their high school careers. Graduation is just around the corner, colleges have been selected, acceptance letters have been mailed out. The last thing to do is allow the high school years to go out with a bang. And that means one very important thing: a killer prom! Best friends Jordan, Tara, and Nisha know that their Prom will be better than any seen before. Jordan is the girl every female wants to be, and every male wants to date. Too bad for the guys, because she's already saddled down with Nate. Nate and Jordan are the ideal couple. She's the gorgeous cheerleader; he's the handsome star quarterback. It's a match made in heaven. Or, at least, it should be. Jordan thinks that she has everything all planned out. She'll win Prom Queen, graduate at the top of her class, and live happily ever after with Nate. But sometimes, things prove to be different than you could have ever expected. When Jordan receives a less than stellar grade in her photography class, she realizes that it's time to get her priorities straight. And with a new boy in her life, Jordan can't help but see things in a whole new light. Nisha just wants to be an All-American girl. Unfortunately, she can't shake her Indian culture, or her old-fashioned parents who believe that she shouldn't date until she's, basically, their age; or, she should only date boys from a similar background to hers. Of course, Nisha refuses to conform to her parents wishes; thus, she is keeping her American boyfriend, Brian, top secret. Dating for six months, Nisha believes that Brian is perfect, and is absolutely dying to have him accompany her to Prom. The problem is the fact that Nisha has never introduced Brian to her parents. Even worse, Nisha's parents would never allow her to attend a dating function, and Prom falls into that category. Now, with the help of Jordan and Tara, Nisha is forced to figure out a way to have her dream of attending Prom with Brian come true - no matter what it takes. The odd girl out, Tara is the only one out of the trio to be single - and ready to mingle. As the chairperson of the Prom Committee, however, Tara feels that it is her duty to attend the biggest event of the year with a date on her arm. Problem is, there are no prospects, and time is running out. When a secret admirer known only as "K" begins sending Tara dreamy text messages, she can't help but blush - and wonder who could be crushing on her. Even with the help of Jordan and Nisha, however, Tara is unable to figure out who her secret admirer is. But when she agrees to meet "K," Tara realizes that all bets are off, and begins to put a plan in place to help her snag a date for Prom. I so loved this book, but it was too short! And now I have to buy the n ext one cause the author left me hanging. i can't wait to find out what happens! Jordan better not cheat on nate. He is a cutie!!!

This book appeals to some of the middle school students who I read with. This type of realistic fiction interests them, since they have similar aspirations and dreams.

Three friends all on the verge of their most memorable high school moment: the Prom. Jordan, a cheerleader who led her team to the Nationals, is the girlfriend to Nate, the most popular guy in school, and is sure to win Prom Queen, but when a class problem and a new boy come along, she begins to wonder if Nate and Prom Queen title is what she really wants. Tara is the head of the Prom committee, but when a secret admirer starts texting her (and it not turning out to be who she wants) and one of her Prom helpers stages a coup, she starts to question if Prom night is going to be all that perfect. Nisha is an Indian-American, and her super-strict parents haven't even heard of the Prom--will she be able to figure out a way to convince them that she has to go, with secret boyfriend Brian in tow? As the first in a series of three, Le Ny takes the reader into the lives of three girls getting ready for Prom in the four weeks before it happens, with a countdown beginning each chapter. Each character is extremely well-written, really giving the reader good insight into each of the girls' personalities. I also really enjoyed Nisha's chapters because of all the Indian terminology used (learning new things!), as well as the whole strictness factor because of her culture. The last three chapters leave the reader with a cliffhanger ending for each of the girls, making me glad that the second book is out already, and the third out in just one month, all at a pretty cheap price as they're all small paperbacks.
