excellent recipes from a trusted professional

Anyone who would compare Dorie Greenspan to Sally's Baking clearly has no idea what a trusted resource is when it comes to baking. There is NO comparison between a well-established, professionally trained baker with years and years of experience/expertise writing cookbooks, working with lauded and esteemed professionals in the industry for decades and being a trusted name in baking with someone who writes a blog. Anyone with a mixing bowl and an oven can post pictures online and copy others formulas or barely tweak them to claim them as their own. If you are buying a cookbook just based on the pictures alone then then professional-level baking books aren't for you. Yep, the illustrations in this one aren't great, I'm sorry to say, but that has no bearing on the recipes, which are solid and will yield excellent results if you can follow a recipe.
