Don't Let the Old Man In: How to avoid growing old...too quickly!

I never thought I would write a book on retirement, after all, most people are too busy sorting out the first two thirds of their lives to worry about the last third. Big mistake! Generally, your first 30 years are the growing up years, education, career, marriage etc. 30 to 60 you're in day-to-day cruise control. Bringing up a family, moving up the property ladder, career advancement and then, boom! The children have gone, the mortgage paid off and the job has become a tread mill to nowhere. Retirement suddenly comes into focus having been some blurred thought on the distant horizon. Retirement can mean many things to many people but generally, we think of retirement as a natural slowing down process. Our thoughts turn to weekends away, grandchildren, gardening, hobbies, and time to relax and enjoy the fruits of our labour. Well, my friends, this is a dangerous time, the old man is lurking. He has time on his side as he watches, waits and smiles knowingly, as you slowly slip into a person that's a shadow of your former self. An acceptance by you to the ageing process and without thinking you slowly become institutionalised....in your own home! I was 40 when I had to face up to the fact that my army career was almost over. It forced me to think about the future. I realized that if I continued to work for another 20 years, I would struggle to achieve a comfortable retirement. I started to think "outside of the box" and slowly realised there were other paths you could take, that would lead you away from traditional retirement and be a lot healthier and much more fun. So, my goal here is to "show and tell" you what I discovered along the way... almost by accident! I have observed retired people, and the so called "super agers" have many things in common. They are not necessarily wealthy, good looking, intelligent or even excel in sports. It's more the way they live. The real secret to longevity is the lifestyle you choose to have. And the shocking truth is that most people could have it if they just made a plan and refused "to let the old man in." I hope it inspires you to think about your own retirement plans. I've tried to outline the steps we took, as a very average family, but with, perhaps, above average goals. There are no guarantees of longevity. I started off believing in the quality of years, not the quantity, I've now decided that it's no bad thing to want both.
