fun facts and good info, stunning illustrations

We bought this as a bargain book at our local bookstore. Ever wonder what it would be like to have a ferocious dino staring you in the face? This book gives you a good idea!! The drawings of the dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are truly astounding. Fantastic detail, vibrant colors...the animals practically leap off the pages at you. Very well done, and fascinating to boot. For each dinosaur featured (each on its own 2-page spread), several interesting facts are included, key body parts are discussed, and its hunting habits are illustrated. This is where I would caution parents, though...the illustrations and text for the hunting (or being hunted) sections are rather detailed and graphic, with dinos ripping flesh, blood spurting, intestines actually hanging out in one pic... I could easily see really young or easily frightened children having nightmares from that, but my 7-year-old has been reading about dinosaurs since he was 3, and watching Animal Planet and similar fare, and wasn't fazed. If he was new to learning about dinosaurs, he probably would have been disturbed by it. I quickly went through the more graphic images so we didn't linger too long. There's a reason this book is subtitled, "The World's Most Terrifying Creatures"! If you child is old enough and a real dinosaur fan, then I would recommend this book, especially as a used book at the prices I'm seeing here. The illustrations alone are worth it.
