Nice quality book

This book is high quality and durable. Each page is thick (envision the best kids board book you can find). Each page houses a stencil; and each stencil has a few items to trace. You store the stencil on the page from which it was pulled (picture those board books which double as jigsaw puzzles; you pull out the pieces and the book page acts as the frame in which to build the puzzle; this book is the same concept - whereby each stencil fits nicely back into its "home" page). Note: The stencils are just the outlines of the pieces of equipment. From there, you have to freehand your own detail lines - tracks, doors, windows, etc. I bought this for my 3 year old and he was not interested in it at this age. He liked to flip the pages and look at the pictures; but when it came time for HIM to use the stencils, he wasn't interested. I traced a few for him; but that wasn't very thrilling for him either. His preference was to remove each stencil page, play with it, and then put it back in the book. Meanwhile, I'm thinking: He's going to ruin these stencils before we use them for their intended purpose! I put the book on the shelf and we'll try again in 6-12 months. I think he's just too young.

Pleasant surprise

When my two boys (ages 5 and 3) got this book as a Christmas gift, I was very skeptical. I figured it would be dusty by New Years and in the giveaway box by Valentine's Day. My boys LOVE this book! The stencils lift out of the book easily, and we use them on a clipboard so the kids can trace the figures themselves without wiggling. I would recommend colored pencils for the tracing part, just to spare the stencil. The book is sturdy, colorful, and engaging. I would highly recommend this book for any child who likes construction equipment.
