Who is the greatest boxer of all time? This is a question that always promotes great debate. Many would propose Mohammed Ali. However, I have another suggestion, Diagoras of Rhodes, who fought in Greece, two and a half thousand years ago. Diagoras was twice the boxing champion at the Olympic Games, four times at the Isthmian Games, twice at the Nemean Games, and at least once at the Pythian Games. However, it was not only Diagoras who excelled in boxing in his family - his sons and grandsons also became Olympic champions. Such was their success that they were celebrated by the Theban poet Pindar in his Olympic Odes, number VII. If you visit Rhodes today, you will arrive at Diagoras Rhodes International Airport and can watch Diagoras football club at the Diagoras Stadium.
