THE STORY: Catherine North, the pregnant widow of a charismatic preacher, is uneasy when she discovers that her new home is at a place called Devil's Beach. Emmett Dalton, a science fiction writer, is her new neighbor. Devil's Beach has belonged to his family for generations. He loves the place and resents his grandfather's generosity in giving half of the property to a stranger. Emmett's computer is set up to take advantage of the ocean view. He sees Catherine walking on the beach and inadvertently begins to weave her into his novel. Their isolation, mutual needs and a strange mystique conspire to throw them together but the specter of her husband, the arrival of Emmett's ex-wife and the discovery of her husband's connection with Devil's Beach complicate the situation. Like the girl in the legend, Catherine is trapped by the pounding surf. And the legend? It's just a story -- or is it?
