One of six US-built Destroyer Escorts of the Cannon Class, transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1950 under the Mutual Defense Aid Plan. Built for escorting convoys during WW2, these diesel-electric ships were mainly used by countries allied to the US during the build-up of their navies in the fifties. As the Korean War developed in this timeframe, two of the Dutch ships were sent to the warzone in support of the US Navy, mainly in the shore bombardment role.
