This book takes a group of people (the Mexican-Indian people of Nogales) and weaves a story in which you are introduced to the traditions & customs, the folklore, and the ways of life of the people in contrast to the average American urban lifestyle. It's easy to fall in love with the people, their love for each other, their strong sense of community, and the desert from which they wrest their meager living. It paints the desert as a beautiful place from which inner peace can be obtained, but that most of the tourists never gain that peace because they only visit the tourist attractions and don't really visit the desert. It is a metaphore for the hardship of finding true companionship in the shallow, materialistic society of the city. It paints a romance between two love-struck people that couldn't be. From the back: Morning sun spilled gold over the desert sand, reminding Pablo that Julie and her family would soon be leaving. He longed to intervene, to ask her to marry him before it was too late. He knew she was willing to give up everything to keep him. How could he make her understand he was letting her go because he loved her?
