Around the turn of the millennium the Niger Delta was frequently in the news, with reports of violence, abductions and unrest. Whilst black gold was being pumped from the ground beneath their feet, the rapidly growing local population continued to live in poverty. Apparent neglect from government led to the rise of pressure groups of young men who used their muscle to extract a share of the bonanza from the oil companies for their communities. This narrative covers eighteen months spent in Nigeria at that time. The author was involved in a project to improve the electricity supply in this area and thereby bring development, but his book is not technical or academic. It is a light-hearted narrative relating the day-to-day joys and tribulations of working and living in this spirited environment.
