A True Southern Story

I read this book because I enjoyed The Prayer Tree and Saving Grace, by the same author, so much. I was truly engrossed once again by the real-life characters. Ms Jones has a knack for allowing a lot of insight into her characters. In addition she approaches some real-life situations with compassion and grace as well as humor. You've got to read this one!

These characters are full of 'beans and vinegar'!

Deep Dixie is chock-full of honest-to-goodness 'characters.' You know the kind...lively, sassy, spunky, vivacious and truly unforgettable! The manner in which author Annie Jones handles one particular 'touchy' subject is inspiring. Deep Dixie is a story that will teach you that family comes in all shapes and sizes...and colors (like cotton-candy-orange...ha!), that true forgiveness is a real blessing, and that if God sends help during times of trouble, you'd reach out and grab it...even if you think that help looks suspiciously like the king of the 'great big Bubba-goobers.' I loved this book.

I'm still smiling about the characters in this book.

That is what stood out for me. Ms. Jones created a cast of characters that jumped off the pages for me. This is a unique story about an eccentric family in Mississippi and about love and family relationships. I gave it four out of five stars because Dixie and Riley were not together as much as I wanted them to be but when they were I really wanted them to get together and stay that way. I liked this book and will reccomend it to friends.

Southern humor, romance, family upheavals and a big secret.

Every person is some other person's rowboat. How you ask? This sweet novel answers this question, and along the way, presents us with a cast of characters to delight in.Hero: Riley, a man in search of a stable homelife and parental rights to his daughter (his sister's child). An honorable workaholic who has to overhaul his life, obtain goals, and yet not compromise his faith and morality. He's got legal hassles.Heroine: Dixie, a hot-tempered and loving Southern belle with too many responsibilities piling up on her. She needs a hand, and is letting pride and a sense of family duty hold her back. She's got legal hassles.Set-up: Riley wants to complete a business deal initiated by Dixie's dad and be a partner. Dixie wants to run the company on her own and feels Riley is stepping on her turf a mite too insistently. While they have their tug-of-war on business dealings, they both find they need to learn to accept help, and to give help. Additional goodies: An almost centenarian black woman of immense faith who hasn't lost her sass--or revealed her biggest life secret. A couple of totally whack, but endearing, relatives. A couple of sweet little girls, an estranged relative with heartbreaks of his own, another estranged who can cause big trouble for Riley, and a cranky apricot-colored dog.Tone: heart-warming and inspiring doused liberally with Southern charm and humor. Spiritual matters are in the forefront--this is after all a work of fiction categorized as "Inspirational". Kindly do not be put off by this. It's a lovely, sweet book of a funny, wholesome romance and addressing family issues with decency and forgiveness.Recommendation: Buy it. Read it. Feel good.*Mir*

Great Fun, Good Message!

Annie Jones creates a sassy Southern family that shakes a whole lot of laughs from the family tree. Peachie Too, the psychotic yodeling poodle and her owner Aunt Sis (with hair dyed the same shade of pink as her dog) and Smiling Bob aka The Judge are a regular hoot. Add to that the touching story of a 100 year old woman, reconcilliation and a smart romance for the heroine, Dixie, and it's one terrific read!
