It Ain't Enough to Be Good

In an instant, young Daquan Watson's world was turned upside down. One act of violence has shattered the family life he once knew. Now living with Grandma Mama in The Calliope Projects, Third Ward, a notorious, drug-infested housing projects, it's just a matter of time before the lure of the streets is too much to resist. With death around every corner, will Daquan escape? And with that, DEATH AROUND THE CORNER heads off into a violent, complicated, gritty and fascinating storyline. Books about the hood appear in a steady flow today and the flow just seems to continue to increase. However, quantity does not make up for quality. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER beats the odds. C-Murder's gripping account of one young man's experiences adds immeasurably to one's understanding of the challenges faced by many of our black youth. Its setting is rich in local color and local characters. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER proves to be exciting, with a jaw-dropping climax. Multi-platinum rapper C-Murder takes a gamble and wins, so does the reader. Maybe he can do for New Orleans literary what his brother Master P has done for New Orleans ' rap scene. Highly recommend. Looking forward to Tru Publishing. Reviewed by: Toni

THE REALEST NOVEL OUT THERE!

THIS STORY WAS ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS I HAVE READ IN A HOT MINUTE! C-MURDER KEPT IT VERY RAW, GUTTER, STREET, AND ON TOP OF IT ALL, VERY REALISTIC! WHO SAYS THAT RAPPERS ARE ONE DIMENSIONAL? I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT BOOK FROM HIM.

Surprisingly Good Read!!!

I admit to being somewhat hesitant to purchase this book. C-Murder being a rapper does not neccesarily mean that he would be a good author. I know that rappers tell stories but those stories are done to blazing beats so my question was could C-Murder produce a blazing book? I was pleasantly surprised that he could. Death Around The Corner managed to captivate me while telling the tale of Daquan who's struggling to survive being poor in New Orleans'Calliope projects. The typical urban formula is apparent in the book, tragic childhood breeds contempt for law enforcement which in turn spurns a life of crime. But what makes Death Around The Corner rise above similar books was it's ability to portray a moral message to it's readers. A message so clearly depicted that I'll be happily requiring my teenage son to read this book to help spark a positive dialogue about life choices. A dialogue that a C-Murder album could never inspire which definately proves that this rapper can provide a service to young black men.

"This urban novel is an absolutely riveting read that tells it like it is, straight with no chaser."

"Death Around The Corner is an outstanding read. It distributes a hard dose of reality in the hood." "At the tender age of five Daquan Watson witnesses a murder committed by his father, who ends up in prison for life. His mother is a drug addict and soon abandons him, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother." "Unfortunately, Daquan is exposed to drug dealing from his cousin Jerome. He has aspirations of becoming a rapper, but decides to deal drugs for a while until he can get his music career started." "A drug bust occurs and Jerome is sent to prison. Daquan is asked to step in and run things for Jerome with his connection Mandi." "As Daquan becomes deeply involved in the drug game, one of his buddies becomes envious. Just when Daquan gets a chance to sign with No Limit Records as a rap artist and decides to stop selling drugs, his best friend Nut turns on him and his life is put in jeopardy." "The message is definitely clear in this dramatic tale. Death can truly be around the corner for those who get caught up in this deadly game." "Corey "C-Murder" Miller does an awesome job depicting this gritty tale. He paints this story so vividly that readers can't help but to visualize it and learn from it. This urban novel is an absolutely riveting read that tells it like it is, straight with no chaser."

Death Around the Corner by C-Murder:An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review

Daquan Watson was 5 years old, the day his life changed forever. His father arrested for murder and a mother addicted to drugs. Daquan is sent to live with his grandmother in Calliope, the notorious, drug-infested projects in New Orleans. Over the years, his cousin Jerome takes Daquan under his wing and teaches him the "game" and soon, Daquan is learning more than any school can teach him. When Daquan gets locked up, he discovers a new love: hip-hop. He is determined to use his skills to get out of the projects but when Jerome gets locked up, Daquan must take over and that leads to decisions that may cost him everything. Death Around The Corner by C-Murder is a suprisingly good story, it grabs the reader's attention and you find it hard to put the book down. However, at times it can be hard to believe given Daquan's age and the timeline but Death Around The Corner is a gritty yet touching story that will appeal to lovers of urban fiction.
