As I say in the book's introduction, "I am a literature nerd". I love the classics, and when I first thought of writing a book about them, I decided I wanted to do something other than just literary analysis. So what might make it worthwhile, original, useful...something that doesn't read entirely like a graduate paper? I finally landed on the idea of making a "case for the classics" by combining literary analysis with classroom anecdotes, humorous commentary, personal interests I've incorporated into lessons, and ideas for assignments. I think every veteran teacher has enough "material" to write his or her own book. This is mine. Although there are many great modern works out there, and I wholeheartedly support anything that engages a student with reading, I feel a responsibility to help keep the classics alive, as there is so much to be gleaned from them. Let's not let these literary pioneers die a second death - one of omission from our classrooms.
