A Risky Treat...and a Worthy Book!

Michael Apter's Dangerous Edge is the first book to look at risk-taking without the condesending and negative judgment about risk-takers. Apter's book looks at risk-taking, and what draws people to it, from many angles. His discussion of boredom, as a prime prompter of risky behavior, is intriguing. And his "tiger in the cage" metaphor (now known as "Apter's Metaphor) is priceless. My own book, Right Risk (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2003), was largely influenced by Apter's work. I am indebted to Apter's great contribution to the study of risk-taking and risk-takers!
