This is an exquisite book that explains the fascinating world of cultural anthropology. I am a senior in High School and accidentally stumbled upon this book. After reading the first two pages of this book, I just couldn't put it down! The author takes you upon a journey in understanding human culture. The author clearly points out that humans develop culture and are forever dependent on their culture. If culture does not exist, than humans can not exist. The author says in his preface, "Those people over there can be made to appear very different from us. But it is just as true that we learn about ourselves by studying others."It is this quote that I have found to be the essence of anthropology. I have become so infatuated by this book that I am planning on doing some kind of anthropological studies in college.I think that this book should be required reading for all children. It allows us to open our eyes to the world around us and take a look at people from their perspective. After looking at the violence in the world around me, maybe by reading this book and applying some of its principles, people will begin to see others as they want themselves to be seen--different, but special.
