An elderly uncle given to occasional bouts of confusion causes the Andersons to wonder if they are able to care for him or if he should be sent to a nursing home. This description may be from another edition of this product.
You should not pass up this book. It is not only hilarious, but heartfelt, well-written and will make you look at your own life differently. Auch does an incredible job with this book. I have read it and re-read it and read it outloud to family members. Every time I laugh so hard I can't read and it brings out emotions in ways few authors can do. I don't usually re-read books, or hunt down out of print copies, but I had to have this on in my library so I can continue to share it with those I know and love. IT IS A TREASURE!!

Davey Anderson, an eleven year old boy, has just moved from the city to the country. He has to deal with bullies that are twins, a brother that isn't to glad about having a brother, and he has just found out that his uncle is going to live in his room. He will have to move in with his jock brother, Brad. His uncle sometimes has flashbacks into the past. When his Uncle Will arrives home, he seems like a normal person. Then, one day walking home from school, Will is standing on the bridge over the stream by Davey's house. Davey sees him and tries to get him to come home with him, but Will is calling Davey Ray. Davey, remembering that the reason Will lives with them now is because Will brother Ray died a few months before, plays along and finally gets Will home. A few days later, Davey and his backyard neighbor, Sara Wiederman, are assigned to be partners for the science fair. They build a volcano but in walking it home they are attacked by the spider twins and their project is ruined. In the attack, Davey and Sara get tied up to a tree. Thinking he's a kid, Will saves them and scares away the twins. Davey and Sara have just enough time to build a new volcano, but at the science fair disaster happens. The mouse that Davey's mother had been trying to catch crawls out of the volcano and ruins the entire science fair. While at the science fair, Will falls in love with Davey's bus driver, Ms. Guptill, and spends every dinner at her house. One night, Will and Davey are in the house alone. Will, thinking he's a kid, ruins Brad's model airplane. Davey gets very frustrated because he knows Brad will blame it on him so he yells at Will. Will is scared and upset because "Ray" yelled at him. Scared, Will runs away into the woods behind his house.
