Ingenuously written. de Boissiere captured the essence of Caribbean life. Even though written half a century ago, this story depicts accurately the struggles then and even now. In tracing the radical formation of unionism, a love story unfolds which surmounted ills such as poverty, political interference, class and racial differences. The language dotted with Creole, a treasure passed on through the generations, is delightful. I can't help but agree that this work should be classified as a "realist fiction".
