Pro hockey with a nasty twist

Anna Peters is less than enthusiastic about investigatng star hockey player Jurgen Parkes' involvment in teammate Alf Rene's death. Small wonder - Parkes is uncommunicative, the Orlando Showmen's organization in denial and evidence virtually nil. Hired to provide damage control for Parkes' image, Peters refuses to limit herself to the information that agents and family members have to offer. Her persistance reveals some long-buried secrets as well as more recent financial skullduggery and culminates in a series of what appear to be unrelated deaths. "Cross Check" is tight, precise and a pleasure to read. The storyline makes logical sense; the personalities and factors dovetail neatly but the solution is neither obvious nor based on some unbelievable motive. Character development is strong and realistic: Peters is likeable and recognizable, right down to muscle spasms and career worries. Parkes seems to mirror the conflicted personality all to evident in many sports stars, and the supporting cast, from a venal Suzi Rene (Alf's wife) to "Skipper," ex-football player and charismatic colleague of Anna's. Pacing is brisk and the plot line keeps moving. This book was a fun and fast read.
