I have read all three editions of The Cross and the Crescent by Lindy V. Avakian. Mr. Avakian, who passed away on January 21, 2003, wrote and published his first version under the DeVorss imprint in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1965. UCS PRESS published an edited edition in 1989, eliminating approximately 500 typo and minor errors in the 1965 printing; also, the trial dialogue format was changed to allow for easier, uninterrupted reading. It was the UCS PRESS edition that then California Governor George Deukmejian endorsed with these words: "All sensible Americans are rightfully horrified by the treatment of the Jews of Europe by the Nazi Regime. We also dare not forget that the Armenian nation and people faced Genocide early in this century under the swords and gunfire of the Ottoman Empire. We cannot again permit any people to suffer such atrocities as those documented in this book." Mr. Avakian released a trade paperback version under the Golden West Publishers, Unltd. imprint in 1998. That edition includes all of the text and photo inserts as they were presented in the UCS PRESS edition. The photos also were presented in the 1965 edition. The "dustjacket" copy is virtually identical in both the UCS PRESS and GWP editions. I find it most interesting that the trade paperback edition does not credit the UCS PRESS edition, which first presented the text as it is exactly duplicated in the GWP edition. It is for that reason that I give the paperback addition a four-star rating, while reserving the five-stafr rating for the UCS PRESS hardbound edition. I found the read to be exactly as promised in the dustjacket copy: "You are about to read one of the most powerfully compelling Holocaust documents ever written."
